Mark Lawrenson has said he thinks his departure from the BBC was down to him being '65 and a white male'. He was told of format changes to this year's Football Focus back in March.
He definetly wasn't my favourite pundit but I reckon he's spot on.

I never liked him at all, but admit he was a character, old school, so yea maybe there is some truth in it as he is ''outdated'' in terms of what the BBC are looking for now.
All that said, he should actually be very grateful to them, hasn't he been part of the furniture there in a well paid job for 20 years plus? Same as Hansen was, and Crooks.

To be honest he has been stealing a living with the bbc for most of that time & for the last 5 years at least he was disinterested & acted as though he didnt want to be there.
Have no problem with media outlets refreshing their panels from time to time but it does seem that the replacements MUST be female or black regardless of competence.
That said there are lots of diabolical white male pundits ... J Redknapp, Scholes etc

No one is guaranteed a job for life, he just wanted to go on stealing a living until he decided he'd had (made) enough and then leave on his own terms. Honestly can't believe he's got the gall to complain about it, regardless who else the bbc take on.

Some people are missing the point. Lawro of course was a hopeless tit. But he's been that for fucking years. Had that been the reason for binning him off then that's great news. But if he has been binned off due to the BBCs preoccupation with filling every single position with people with factory fitted suntans, regardless of ability, then this is bollocks regardless of what you think of the idiot Lawro. Instead we will now have vacuous fuckwits like Micah Richards, hopeless box tickathon Alex fucking Scott or serial race card dropper Eni Aluko to spew mind meltingly obvious shit in words of two syllables or less down everyone's tellybox because the BBC are so desperate to be on message.

BAME (Black and Asian Mixed Etnics) people are over-represented on mainstrean TV.
Ethnic minorities make up 22% of actors and presenters. If you include TV advertising this rises to somewhere approaching 30%.when you look at English Commercial TV areas

Diversity Uk latest figures (July2022) Currently estimate BAME represent 14% of UK Population but this rises to around 18% in England.
Make of that what you will.

Those old school pundits were lazy and dull and should have been binned years ago. Their footballing knowledge was limited to a few players at a few clubs and they couldn’t even be arsed to research the teams in the Premier League.
I’d take Micah Richards and Alex Scott over all of them, not necessarily because they are any better on the football side but he seems like a laugh and I’d much rather look at her with the sound down at half time than any of the males that sit there talking shit.
All that being said Vexed is right about the point being missed and outside of TV world we all know that if you’re going for a promotion or new job and the competition looks right, you’re in with a tough shout of getting the job.

I get the diversity argument but apply that to sport and I’m afraid the percentages will change massively….huge amounts of black people play football so it should have a huge representation, swap that to cricket and huge amounts of Asians play the sport. Golf and it gets swapped out to mainly white folk, the true example of this is when an Olympics is on and it swaps to the varying sports with it’s varying colours of presenters/commentators…..
